Back in 2004 I was busy creating a children’s book with the amazingly talented David Rogers. I had the great challenge of enhancing David’s brilliant writing with illustrations. I don’t think I did it justice.
This is one of the designs for “Pablo Paints The Zoo”. It’s an uplifting and hopeful story about one very imaginative and frustrated artist named Pablo. By day, Pablo is a municipal facility painter for the the drab city of Starksville, a place where no color exists. By night, Pablo trades in his municipal whites, blacks and muds for the joyful hues of the rainbow, expressing colors on a cascade of canvass that take over every space in his tiny apartment. He would very much like to share his art and color with the town but the mayor of Starksville wouldn’t have it. Starksville has laws and a reputation to keep.
That is until Pablo decides to paint the zoo with his own palette.
On the left is an image of Pablo stepping back from his canvass to check his creation while his buddy bird friend gives his head a quizzical tilt.
The more I look at this sketch the more I realize how important it is to express yourself in the most authentic way possible, regardless of what your critics may think. I think this is a great message especially now that we are starting a new year. Since the creation of this book(which has never been released) we have seen our share of movies about pandas, animals and zoos so I don’t want to sound repetitive….. still, the messages; be yourself, follow your bliss, be authentic, live the life you were born to live etc., are as relevant today as they ever were. As my friend, the great story teller, Bob Kanegis http://www.storytellerscampfire.com/ would urge, Dream Big. And maybe add little color to your life.
